Carotid and vertebral colour Doppler ultrasound

Examines the neck arteries that carry blood to the brain. It is the reference test for detecting carotid plaques and preventing stroke.

What it is

Colour Doppler ultrasound of the supra-aortic trunks examines the carotid and vertebral arteries, showing the vessel walls and blood flow velocity.

What it is used for

It detects carotid plaques and stenosis, measures arterial wall thickness and contributes to cardiovascular risk assessment. It is indicated after a TIA or stroke, in the presence of a carotid bruit or several risk factors, and to monitor known plaques.

How it is performed

The patient lies down with the neck slightly extended; the probe is moved along both sides of the neck with gel.

Preparation

  • No preparation.
  • Avoid necklaces and high-necked clothing.
  • Bring previous tests to assess how plaques have changed.

Report

The report is written by the doctor who performs the test.

Frequently asked questions

How often should it be repeated?

It depends on the degree of plaque: more often for significant stenosis, at longer intervals for mild disease.

Does a plaque mean I need surgery?

In most cases no: it is treated with medication and monitored over time.

Does the test also show the arteries inside the skull?

No, it studies the neck vessels; transcranial Doppler is used for the intracranial arteries.
