What it is
The electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes placed on the chest, wrists and ankles. The 12-lead ECG provides a complete view from different angles.
What it is used for
It documents arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and conduction disorders, signs of ischaemia or a previous heart attack, thickening of the heart due to hypertension, and the effects of some medicines and electrolytes. It is part of every cardiology consultation.
How it is performed
The patient lies down with the chest uncovered; the electrodes are placed on the skin and the recording takes a few seconds. The test causes no discomfort.
Preparation
- No special preparation is needed.
- Avoid creams or oils on the chest on the day of the test.
- Bring any previous ECGs for comparison.
Report
The tracing is read by the cardiologist, usually during the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does a normal ECG rule out heart disease?
It is reassuring but does not rule out every condition, such as silent coronary artery disease or intermittent arrhythmias, which require other tests.
Can it be done at home?
Yes: within the city of Milan the practice performs ECGs at home during a cardiology consultation.
Does the chest need to be shaved?
In some cases small areas are shaved so that the electrodes stick properly.
