What it is

The Holter ECG is a small recorder connected to electrodes on the chest that continuously stores the electrocardiogram.

In addition to the traditional system with leads, the practice has a wireless 7-day recorder that is applied directly to the chest and is water-resistant.

What it is used for

It looks for arrhythmias that do not show up during a consultation, such as paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, pauses or tachycardias; it correlates symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness or fainting with the heart rhythm; and it assesses the effectiveness of antiarrhythmic treatment. A longer recording increases the chance of capturing occasional episodes.

How it is performed

After the device is applied, you go back to your normal activities. It is useful to note in a diary the time of any symptoms and of your main activities. At the end, the device is returned to the practice for analysis.

Preparation

  • Come with clean chest skin, without creams.
  • With the traditional recorder you cannot shower; with the wireless device you can.
  • Avoid electric blankets and MRI scans during the recording.
  • Continue your usual medicines unless told otherwise.

Report

The report is written by the cardiologist after analysing the whole recording.

Frequently asked questions

Which duration is best?

It depends on how often symptoms occur: for daily episodes 24–48 hours are enough, while for occasional symptoms a recording over several days is more useful.

Can I exercise?

Yes; in fact it is useful to do the activities that usually trigger your symptoms, noting them in the diary.

Can I sleep normally?

Yes, the device is light and does not interfere with sleep.
