What it is
Ultrasound shows the nodule and guides the needle precisely. Fine-needle aspiration collects cells for cytology, while core needle biopsy collects a fragment of tissue for histology.
What it is used for
Thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, breast nodules and superficial lumps whose features require a diagnosis. Biopsies of deep masses, for example of the liver or abdomen, are performed in hospital.
How it is performed
After the skin is disinfected and, if needed, local anaesthetic is given, the needle is inserted under ultrasound guidance. At the end a dressing is applied and pressure is held for a few minutes.
Preparation
- Tell us if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines: the doctor will advise whether and how to stop them.
- Bring the ultrasound scan and previous tests.
- Fasting is not required.
Report
The result of cytology or histology is available after a few working days.
